1 Chronicles 4: 9-10

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez,[c] saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” 10 Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.

When I started to review this week’s sermon topic “Prayers for Blessings” and saw the scripture from 1 Chronicles I will admit I was a little skeptical. I had never read the best-selling book by Bruce Wilkinson, Prayer of Jabez. I had heard a lot of negative feedback about the message of this book portraying “prosperity gospel”, that if you pray this prayer daily great blessings will come your way, health, friends and you will become more attractive also. I thought it was somewhat like the email chains we reluctantly receive, send this on to ten people and a $1,000 dollars will show up to your door in two days. Do not break the chain or all the blessings will be gone for everyone. Yeah right. That is what I thought this book was about, I had remember seeing it somewhere in my house so I started on a search, wonders of wonders it was actually on my study bookcase in the upstairs of my home. I opened the book to peruse it and a slip of paper fell it. This is what it said:

I did not write in the book in case you do not want to keep it___

Try this for thirty days and let me know if there is any difference in your life!! If it is, you then can do a study course on it for the whole church---If not forget it!!! Love Ya, Grandma Nell

These days Grandma Nell is a travelling gypsy travelling from child to child until they tire of her and send her on to the next sibling, (this is by her own admission), but there was a time  when I could gaze on her every Sunday as she occupied the second pew at New Market. She was then and still is now my spiritual mentor and keeps me well supplied with books. So I have endeavored to take on this long neglected challenge and pray this prayer and live this prayer for the next thirty days, I invite every one of you to join me. After reading the book I have a different perspective on what expanding my territories means, not in wealth, although that may happen, but expanding my ministry boundaries beyond my wildest dreams which scares the living daylights out of me, I invite you to become scared with me on the great possibilities we may be missing because we have not asked. I am starting a prayer journal today to catalog how God is expanding my territories and asking daily that his hand be on me and to keep me from harm or doing harm. I encourage you to pick up the book and join us on Sunday and who knows; maybe you too will decide to take this challenge to live a fuller life.
